Class Overview:

Computer Technology provides students with an appreciation of how technology impacts their lives as individuals and as members of the local and global community.  Students will work independently and in groups to develop methods to express their viewpoint.   Students will develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills by using the design cycle to creatively produce solutions to needs and problems within their local and global environments.  Students will communicate their solutions by using written assignments, brochures, imovies, oral presentations, and charts.  Some of the applications students will use to communicate their solutions include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Pages, Inspiration, iMovie, Photo Booth, Comic Life and Garageband.  Throughout the course proper use of computer tools and typing skills will be emphasized.  All students will be introduced to various technology vocabulary, computer management techniques, and other technology resources and tools.


Learner Profile: Students will identify resources and develop skills that will allow them to demonstrate their ability to learn more about a topic of interest (Inquirers).   Through applying learned skills and concepts students will demonstrate their knowledge.  During coursework students will apply critical thinking skills to make informed decisions, consider possible alternative solutions and look at the impact on others (Thinkers, Open-minded, and Caring).  Students will utilize new materials/software in order to complete objectives (Risk-taker). Students will take ownership of their learning (Principled and Balanced). Continuous reflection on the learning process and the students’ ability to communicate areas of strength and weakness will be built into each unit.


Course Description


Grade 6:  Students will be learning touch-typing keyboarding skills throughout the semester.  Students will be introduced to formatting and document editing skills using Microsoft Word, develop spreadsheets data input in Excel, demonstrate presentation skills using power point, as well as video and audio editing using iMovie and Garageband.  Students will also learn how to use the Internet safely and effectively.  Students will learn file management techniques to help them stay organized when using technology.  Internet search techniques will be taught to help students accomplish their assignments effectively. 

Grade 7/8:  Students will review and improve on their proper keyboarding skills introduced in previous years.  Students will improve their writing skills using Word/Pages.  They will expand their experience with Excel/Numbers by using data spreadsheets to create charts and graphs. They will be introduced to different kinds of multimedia tools and techniques to incorporate into their classroom assignments.  Students will develop more advanced use of Microsoft Office and iWork applications within their projects. Students will create videos using iMove with audio from Garageband.  Students will continue to improve on their Internet search techniques to effectively analyze resources, and creatively apply content to their assignments.  Throughout the class students will learn various file management techniques to help them stay organized as well as how to use the Internet safely and effectively.

Keyboarding Goals:

Students will:

  1. Develop keyboarding skills at the computer using proper techniques:
    1. Eyes on copy
    2. Hands on home row
    3. Elbows in, wrists level with hands
    4. Feet flat on the floor
    5. Not looking at your hands or the keys while keying
  2. Drill and practice conscientiously during every class.
  3. Develop a positive attitude toward keyboarding and use it whenever possible.
  4. Students should type all reports assigned in other classes to utilize the skill being learned.



There is no textbook for this class, but ALL students will need to have the following:

  • A packet of loose leaf paper
  • Box of pencils
  • Box of Kleenex
  • USB Drive (optional: alternative way to save work)


6th Grade: Green 3-prong folder with pockets

7th Grade: Red 3-prong folder with pockets

8th Grade:  Blue 3-prong folder with pockets




As not all students have a Mac at home, time is given in class for assignments to be completed.  Homework assignments are limited.  If a student needs additional time to work, he/she may come to lab 102 on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. for Student Support Time to complete any make-up work.  If any student wants to come in early or stay after school to work on make-up work he/she may see me the day before to make an appointment to come in. 

            Most assignments will be turned in electronically rather then by paper.  When I grade an assignment electronically I can see if the student has used the correct commands in completing the projects.  Students need to make sure they save a copy of their work before turning in their assignments.  If an assignment is not saved properly or turned in incorrectly, the work must be redone. 

            The student’s overall evaluation will be comparing their achievement of the four MYP Design Cycle categories; A: Inquiring and analyzing (Group Work), B: Developing ideas (In-Class Assignments), C: Creating the solution (Projects), and D: Evaluating (Presentation).  Additional summative (test) category will be for the end of the year final tests.  Their overall grade is based on the township grading scale, which is printed in the Eastwood agenda book under Academic Opportunities. 


Conduct in the lab


Because of the equipment, students must never run or become involved in horseplay in the lab.  They must also never eat or drink in the lab (including gum and candy).  Students must be seated and ready to listen as class begins.  They must also wait to work on their computers until after the teacher instructions.  They are to remain seated unless they are to pick up a sheet at the printer.  When they need help, they should raise their hand and then continue to try to solve the problem or go on to another part of the project until I arrive.  Talking should be kept to a minimum.  Internet access is limited to days when we are doing assignments that involve the use of the Internet.  When Internet research is done, specialized software is used to limit access to some sites and to monitor student activity.  Students are to print only class projects and assignments and only when the teacher has given permission. 


Be Respectful, prepared, think before acting, do not interrupt, do not start to put your things away until I dismiss you, and NO CHEATING, which includes Plagiarism.
